The company is recruiting a Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Superintendent to support its operations at the Kalumbila Sentinel Site.
This position is ideal for experienced HSE professionals who are passionate about creating safe workplaces, promoting environmental stewardship, and ensuring compliance with Zambia's mining regulations. The successful candidate will play a key leadership role in developing and maintaining a strong safety culture while supporting operational excellence across mining and civil construction activities.
About the Role
Reporting directly to the Project Manager, the Health, Safety and Environment Superintendent will oversee the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the Mine Health and Safety Management System. The position requires a proactive leader who can ensure compliance with company policies, statutory regulations, and internationally accepted health, safety, and environmental standards.
The successful candidate will work closely with operational teams to identify workplace hazards, manage environmental risks, investigate incidents, and promote safe working practices throughout the project.
Key Responsibilities
The selected candidate will be responsible for:
- Leading the implementation of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
- Ensuring compliance with the Mines and Minerals Development Act, Occupational Health and Safety legislation, and company HSE standards.
- Conducting workplace inspections, safety audits, hazard identification and risk assessments (HIRA), and regulatory compliance assessments.
- Investigating workplace incidents, accidents, dangerous occurrences, and near misses while ensuring corrective and preventive actions are implemented.
- Monitoring contractor compliance with Critical Risk Management programmes and Life Saving Rules.
- Coordinating emergency response plans, evacuation procedures, and emergency drills.
- Managing environmental programmes, including waste management, dust suppression, noise control, water quality monitoring, air quality monitoring, rehabilitation, and environmental reporting.
- Supervising occupational health surveillance and industrial hygiene programmes.
- Providing leadership, mentoring, coaching, and performance management for HSE Officers, Safety Inspectors, and Environmental Officers.
- Preparing monthly and statutory HSE reports while maintaining accurate legal registers and compliance records.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
- A Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related discipline from a reputable institution.
- A minimum of eight (8) years of Health, Safety and Environment experience within the mining industry.
- At least three (3) years in a supervisory or superintendent-level role.
- Practical experience in open-pit mining operations.
- Demonstrated experience implementing and managing HSE Management Systems.
- Strong knowledge of incident investigation techniques and workplace risk management.
- Familiarity with Zambia's mining legislation and health, safety, and environmental regulations will be an added advantage.
- A valid driver's licence.
