The Ndola Cement plant is seeking an experienced mechanical engineering professional to support the maintenance and continuous improvement of its production equipment and systems.
The Mechanical Maintenance Engineer will be responsible for the reliability, maintenance and performance of mechanical equipment used in cement production.
The role involves supervising maintenance activities, investigating equipment failures, coordinating manpower and shutdown activities, maintaining spare-parts availability and implementing improvements to minimise downtime and maximise plant availability.
The successful candidate will also provide technical leadership to engineering teams and ensure that maintenance activities are performed according to required quality and safety standards.
Provide technical expertise in the operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment used in cement production, including Vertical Roller Mills (VRMs), reclaimers and related plant equipment.
Ensure plant equipment remains in safe and reliable operating condition through routine inspections, preventive maintenance and timely repairs.
Identify equipment problems, investigate failures and implement corrective actions to reduce downtime.
Evaluate equipment performance, reliability and safety and recommend appropriate improvements.
Support modifications, upgrades and improvements to existing mechanical systems to enhance cement production efficiency.
Prepare and maintain equipment inspection and maintenance checklists.
Conduct mechanical investigations and experiments methodically where required.
Analyse technical data and interpret results to support maintenance and engineering decisions.
Identify, formulate and implement effective solutions to emerging equipment and production problems.
Conduct incident and failure investigations and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
Solicit feedback and observations from equipment operators to identify potential problems and improvement opportunities.
Prepare technical reports and relevant maintenance documentation.
Lead and supervise a team of engineers and maintenance personnel responsible for mechanical maintenance activities.
Plan and coordinate daily maintenance, breakdown and shutdown activities.
Allocate manpower according to maintenance priorities and operational requirements.
Ensure maintenance activities are completed within the required timeframes.
Monitor maintenance work to ensure that required quality standards and procedures are followed.
Provide technical guidance and supervision to maintenance teams.
Prepare and maintain adequate spare-parts inventories to support uninterrupted cement production.
Monitor the availability and usage of critical mechanical spares.
Support maintenance planning to ensure required materials, manpower and equipment are available before scheduled activities.
Utilise the SAP Materials Management (MM) and Plant Maintenance (PM) modules for maintenance and materials-related activities.
Ensure mechanical maintenance activities are carried out in accordance with applicable safety legislation, company procedures and site safety rules.
Ensure plant equipment is maintained in a safe operating condition.
Promote safe working practices among maintenance personnel.
Support incident investigations and implementation of corrective actions.
Ensure maintenance teams comply with established quality and safety requirements.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the cement production and maintenance operations.
Work closely with operators and other departments to improve equipment reliability and plant performance.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Section Head or Head of Department.
Applicants should possess:
A Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field.
At least 5 years of experience in mechanical maintenance.
Previous experience in a cement manufacturing plant is highly preferred.
Experience with mechanical equipment used in industrial production environments.
Experience in maintenance supervision and coordination.
Familiarity with SAP MM and PM modules is an advantage.
Strong mechanical maintenance and equipment reliability knowledge.
Experience with cement plant mechanical equipment, particularly Vertical Roller Mills and reclaimers, is highly desirable.
Equipment failure investigation and incident analysis.
Preventive, corrective and breakdown maintenance.
Maintenance planning and shutdown coordination.
Spare-parts and inventory management.
Knowledge of SAP MM and PM modules.
Engineering problem-solving and root-cause analysis.
Good understanding of industrial safety legislation and procedures.
Ability to evaluate equipment performance, reliability and safety.
Strong supervisory and team leadership skills.
Good incident and failure analysis capabilities.

Good oral and written communication skills.
Ability to coordinate maintenance teams effectively.

This position is based at Ndola Cement and involves working in a large-scale cement manufacturing environment. The role requires regular interaction with mechanical maintenance teams, engineers, equipment operators and other plant departments.
The successful candidate should be comfortable working around heavy industrial machinery and responding to maintenance, breakdown and shutdown requirements while maintaining strict safety standards.
