Sable Zinc Kabwe Limited is inviting applications from experienced engineering professionals for the position of Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) Coordinator. This is a full-time opportunity for a qualified civil engineering professional with expertise in tailings management, dam safety, and mining infrastructure.
The successful candidate will coordinate the safe operation, monitoring, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of the company's Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) located in Kabwe and Ndola. This position is critical in ensuring that tailings facilities operate safely, efficiently, and in accordance with national regulations, engineering standards, and company policies.
About the Role
The Tailings Storage Facility Coordinator will oversee the daily management of the company's TSFs while ensuring compliance with the Tailings Operations Manual, engineering designs, statutory regulations, and international best practices.
The role involves supervising operational staff, coordinating inspections and maintenance activities, managing water balance systems, monitoring dam safety, and working closely with engineering, production, maintenance, health and safety, and environmental teams.
This position requires a proactive individual who understands the importance of responsible tailings management in protecting employees, surrounding communities, company assets, and the environment.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
-Tailings Facility Operations
- Coordinate daily operations of Tailings Storage Facilities at both Kabwe and Ndola sites.
- Supervise TSF Operators and allocate daily work activities.
- Ensure tailings deposition follows approved operational and engineering plans.
- Coordinate reclaim water systems, water balance management, and freeboard control.
Inspection and Monitoring
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting daily, weekly, and monthly TSF inspections.
- Inspecting embankments, spillways, decant structures, drains, pumps, pipelines, and monitoring systems.
- Identifying seepage, erosion, cracking, settlement, instability, or any other structural concerns.
- Maintaining accurate inspection records and monitoring reports.
Maintenance Coordination
The successful candidate will:
- Coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance activities.
- Ensure timely repairs to maintain safe and reliable TSF operations.
- Work closely with maintenance teams to minimise operational risks and equipment downtime.
Regulatory Compliance
The role also includes:
- Ensuring compliance with the Tailings Operations Manual.
- Supporting Environmental Performance Framework (EPF) audits.
- Assisting during regulatory inspections.
- Implementing recommendations from the Engineer of Record (EoR).
- Ensuring compliance with Zambia's mining regulations and company standards.
Risk Management and Safety
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting operational risk assessments.
- Supporting emergency preparedness planning and simulation exercises.
- Promoting safe work practices throughout TSF operations.
- Ensuring environmental protection and responsible tailings management.
Reporting and Communication
The successful applicant will:
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly operational reports.
- Maintain accurate inspection and compliance records.
- Liaise with Engineering, Production, Maintenance, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) departments, consultants, and government regulators.
- Provide timely updates on facility performance and operational risks.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
- Full Grade 12 School Certificate.
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering.
- Tailings Storage Facility or Dam Safety training.
- Current membership with the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ).
- Minimum of five (5) years' experience in civil engineering, mine infrastructure, or Tailings Storage Facility management.
Preferred Experience
Candidates with the following experience will have an added advantage:
- Practical experience managing Tailings Storage Facilities.
- Knowledge of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM).
- Experience implementing Engineer of Record (EoR) recommendations.
- Experience with water balance management and mine water systems.
- Strong understanding of dam safety principles and environmental compliance.
