ALS is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Laboratory Analyst 2 based at its Chingola Laboratory.

About the Role

Reporting to the Lab Manager, the Laboratory Analyst 2 will provide technical support in sample processing and laboratory analysis while operating and maintaining X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) instrumentation. The successful candidate will also contribute to quality control, laboratory housekeeping, instrument maintenance, staff supervision, and continuous improvement initiatives.

This position requires flexibility to work shifts and overtime depending on operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations

  • Process and analyse laboratory samples using XRF instrumentation.

  • Perform sample preparation and support analytical testing.

  • Complete analytical result reporting accurately and within required turnaround times.

  • Assist with laboratory housekeeping and maintain a clean, safe working environment.

  • Support daily laboratory operations and other assigned laboratory functions.

Instrumentation & Equipment

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain XRF instruments.

  • Perform routine instrument performance checks and preventative maintenance.

  • Liaise with instrument vendors and service engineers regarding equipment servicing and repairs.

  • Minimise instrument downtime and ensure equipment availability.

Quality Assurance

  • Perform quality control (QC) procedures and monitor analytical performance.

  • Assist with XRF method development, validation, and implementation.

  • Review and approve test results before final reporting.

  • Ensure compliance with ISO standards and ALS quality management procedures.

  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise and support laboratory staff where required.

  • Organise laboratory shift schedules and workload distribution.

  • Provide on-the-job training and mentoring for laboratory personnel.

  • Promote continuous improvement and technical excellence.

Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

  • Follow all ALS Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (HSEQ) policies.

  • Identify and report workplace hazards and risks.

  • Ensure safe handling of laboratory chemicals, equipment, and samples.

  • Promote a strong safety culture across laboratory operations.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • Diploma in Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification.

Experience

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in an analytical laboratory.

  • Experience working with XRF instrumentation or instrumentation laboratories.

  • Knowledge of laboratory quality control systems.

  • Experience with OES or ICP Spark instrumentation will be an added advantage.

  • Strong understanding of classical wet chemistry and geochemical digestion methods.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

  • Good computer literacy, particularly Microsoft Excel.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be:

  • Citizens or permanent residents of Zambia, or

  • Hold a valid work permit authorising employment in Zambia.
