The National Assembly is inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Pharmacist.

About the Role

The Pharmacist will be responsible for managing pharmaceutical services by ensuring the safe procurement, storage, dispensing, and management of medicines and medical supplies. The successful candidate will provide professional pharmaceutical advice, promote the rational use of medicines, and ensure compliance with applicable pharmaceutical regulations and professional standards.

Key Responsibilities

Pharmaceutical Services

  • Dispense prescribed medicines accurately and provide patients with appropriate dosage instructions.

  • Review prescriptions to ensure accuracy, legality, and suitability before dispensing.

  • Counsel patients on the safe and effective use of medicines and potential side effects.

  • Provide pharmaceutical advice to healthcare professionals where required.

Inventory & Supply Management

  • Procure, receive, and manage pharmaceutical stock and medical supplies.

  • Monitor medicine inventory levels and ensure timely replenishment of stock.

  • Maintain proper storage conditions for medicines in accordance with pharmaceutical standards.

  • Monitor expiry dates and ensure the safe disposal of expired or damaged medicines.

Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance

  • Ensure compliance with the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) requirements and other applicable pharmaceutical regulations.

  • Maintain accurate pharmacy records and controlled drug registers.

  • Implement quality assurance measures to promote safe and effective pharmaceutical services.

  • Participate in audits and inspections relating to pharmacy operations.

Patient Care & Health Promotion

  • Promote the rational use of medicines through patient education and awareness.

  • Participate in health promotion programmes and wellness initiatives.

  • Collaborate with medical practitioners and other healthcare professionals to improve patient outcomes.

  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • Full Grade 12 School Certificate with five (5) credits or better, including English, Mathematics, and a Science subject.

  • Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm), Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), or another recognized Pharmacy qualification.

  • Valid registration and practicing licence with the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ).

Experience

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Minimum three (3) years of relevant post-qualification experience as a Pharmacist.

  • Experience in hospital, institutional, or clinical pharmacy practice will be an added advantage.

  • Experience in pharmaceutical inventory management and medicine procurement.

Required Skills and Competencies

The successful candidate should demonstrate:

  • Sound knowledge of pharmaceutical practice and medicines management.

  • Good understanding of Zambian pharmaceutical laws and regulations.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent communication and patient counselling skills.

  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.

  • Strong organizational and inventory management skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

  • Computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Successful candidates should be willing and able to:

  • Work within a clinical and healthcare environment.

  • Handle medicines and controlled substances in accordance with legal and professional requirements.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and professional ethical standards.

  • Participate in emergency and after-hours healthcare support where required.
